Regional Hospice announces name change

LAURINBURG — Hospice of Scotland County formally announced its name change to Scotland Regional Hospice at a staff breakfast Monday. The name was changed to create awareness among those living in the surrounding counties served by Scotland Regional Hospice.

The nonprofit organization, which was established in 1985, provides end-of-life care, bereavement services and support groups to residents of Scotland, Richmond, Robeson and Hoke Counties in North Carolina as well as Marlboro, Dillon and Chesterfield counties in South Carolina.

“Changing our name to Scotland Regional Hospice identifies us with the areas we serve,” said Camille Utter, the organization’s CEO. “People sometimes think we only serve Scotland County because of the word ‘county’ in the name. We want the surrounding areas to understand that we are involved in each community and want to provide end of life care to everyone who needs hospice care.”

Laurinburg Mayor Tommy Parker and Bennettsville Mayor Heath Harpe were in attendance to meet the staff and to sign proclamations designating November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Scotland Regional Hospice also received signed proclamations from Hamlet Mayor Bill Bayless and Raeford Mayor John McNeill.

“This staff is wonderful. You’re angels, and I can’t thank you enough for what you do,” Parker said as he reflected on his wife’s time in hospice care. “You are special people. You make our community special.

I know this is emotionally difficult, the delivery of somebody’s final days, and I admire you for doing it.”

Scotland Regional Hospice will continue its name change celebration on Thursday when it hosts a Business After Hours event from 5-7 p.m. at the administrative office, 610 Lauchwood Drive, Laurinburg.
