Camp Spinoza - 2011

Kids enjoy Camp Spinoza 2011

Helping children understand and cope with grief was the goal of Camp Spinoza, which was held June 4 and 5, 2011 at Camp Monroe in Laurel Hill. The overnight camp gave 24 children between the ages of 5-13 who have experienced the recent death of a loved one the chance to enjoy a weekend of games, crafts, storytelling and other activities. By sharing their experience of grief with others, children are able to understand what grief is and how to cope with it.

"Once again, Camp Spinoza was a tremendous success," said Tanya Williams, Bereavement Care Coordinator at Hospice of Scotland County. "The campers spent time with other kids just like them, enjoyed a chance to learn about nature, had fun and discovered that they are not alone in their journey through the grieving process."

Hospice volunteers, staff and a special group of youth volunteers worked hard to make the weekend special for campers. "We couldn't offer this experience without the help of so many people who volunteer their time and talents. I can't thank them enough," Williams said.

Camp Spinoza is offered free of charge to any child in Hospice of Scotland County's service area.

Next year's Camp Spinoza will be held June 2-3, 2012. If you would like more information on Camp Spinoza, or if you know a child who would benefit from participating in Camp Spinoza 2012, please contact Tanya Williams at (910) 276-7176, or toll-free at (877) 276-7176.
